Thank you so much for your kind words and encouragement. I'm really sorry for the delay in getting out additional stories and "The Unsteady Earth." In the past 6 months I've gone through divorce, foreclosure, and major surgery ... but I'm trying to get back on track. I very much hope to have some progress to report in 2014.

It looks like the link to the mailing list is broken. Any info. on where we can go to sign up elsewhere? Or ANY info. on forthcoming stories? Cannot WAIT to read The Unsteady Earth! I came across Native Star in the Vaginal Fantasy book club and have torn through all three books. Thanks for sharing your talent and stories with us all!!

I just wanted to congratulate you on your sale to F&SF. I read your story in the Nov/Dec issue and really enjoyed it. Hey you could do a sequel set in WWII and name it "Baba Blacksheep". Maybe not.

But I don't think that's true. If I knew for a fact that you were merely an "NPC" in my life, then what ethical restraints would I have on my behavior toward you? That would put you on the level of one of those random bystanders one runs over with one's car in Grand Theft Auto, and I would have no ethical responsibility to preserve or care for you. The fact that we believe others have an objective reality external to our own is the only possible basis for ethics.

Pigeons have saved thousands of lives throughout history, won medals in two world wars flying through a destructive hell to deliver their messages. They have been demonised by pest control companies for profit. See the webside PICAS. They were given toxic levels of bird flu to check whether they would infect humans and found to be immune. Most of the "doves" released at weddings and funerals are white homing pigeons. Pigeons are not just pigeons - they are amazing creatures, and until the past 20 years were treated with respect. They even have a sense of knowing who they are which most animals and birds to not. The traditional dove with fan tail feathers is actuall a pigeon!

I really, really, really love this. First, because it comforts me to know that I am not the only person who has talked themselves down from a there's-a-ghost-in-the-room panic attack with the simple fact that the dog was still asleep. And secondly, because I was also raised in a supportive, liberal church that I loved and yet I abandoned my faith in high school. Personally, I've settled on a sort of deist/fatalist belief system that works for me. I'm not Christian, but I'm not Atheist or agnostic, either (most people I know are one of the two). You came to the conclusion of your own unknowing in a manner much more rooted in logic than I did, but I essentially reached the same conclusion. It's heartening to know I was not the only one.
